“26 years ago, in April 1986, the world’s worst ever nuclear accident occurred. Reactor 4 of the power station at Chernobyl exploded, unleashing terrifying devastation. No-one knows exactly how many people died as a result; the effects of the radiation. The heat was so intense that it took nine days, and 5000 tons of sand dropped by helicopters, to put out the fires. The radiation, which affects the area, will take a little longer to die down.”

“On the afternoon of April 12 in 2006, a massive explosion shattered the Chernobyl area again. The Zone, as the now 50km wide area got to be known, was characterized by anomalous energy disturbances, rendering even the most advanced form of protective suits worthless to would-be rescue teams. Months passed and nothing could be done. The military quarantined the area to prevent unauthorized entry and perhaps even reassure the local populace that the area was under control and confinement.”

“Almost 4 years after the initial event, the first expeditions could safely traverse several kilometres deep into the Zone. Among these are the Stalkers, poachers that enter the Zone searching for artefacts and anomalous formations that are highly sought after by certain organizations and groups.”

“The Zone is still growing. Every year the area of evacuation must be increased by a couple of kilometres, as anomalous energy disturbances and mutated creatures are observed farther and farther away from the centre of the catastrophe, CHERNOBYL!”
